Ontario’s Success Story on Climate Change – An Update on OPG’s Coal to Biomass Conversions

Brent Boyko.
SR. Manager Business Development, Ontario Power Generation

Ontario Power Generation (OPG)’ s coal closure was the largest single action to combat climate change in North America and today our generating portfolio is 99.7 per cent free of smog and greenhouse gas emissions.

OPG’s thermal generating assets include North America’s largest 100% biomass fuelled Atikokan Generating Station operational since July 2014, and the World’s first coal to advance biomass conversion at Thunder Bay Generating Station which went into commercial operation in January 2015. The presentation will outline the full scope of both projects , share updates on operational experiences, and provide a model for other utilities who are seeking proven solutions to decarbonize their generating portfolios.
